hey guys, just wondering what you use for waterborne base and how well your color matching is outta the gun compared to the chips. our shop went with martin senour vortex and i have been spraying water only about 2 months since we got the setup. i like everything about it except when it comes to color match.:wak what do you all like?
I use PPG EHP and the color matching is hit and miss, with it being a good match more often then not. I really don’t trust the variant cards I have though because they are sprayed on paper and it’s f***ed me over a few times in the translation to a steel or plastic substrate
May 21, 2010 at 6:25 am #21404I have used Cromax Pro and Autowave systems. Hands down the Autowave matches better. I get very good matches with it compared to all the systems I have used be it water or solvent. It’s not perfect but overall very good.
May 21, 2010 at 7:08 am #21407I been using autowave and 90% of the colors are good, picking the right color varient from the deck is critical though. I do have a camera to use but rarely use it. I will tint rather than waste the paint and try another varient. I had a problem only with a few colors, but you will have that.Like I posted earlier, the true reds (vwLA3H) are bad, colors like Chry PR4 are good because they ARE more orange.
May 21, 2010 at 4:03 pm #21408We just switched to martin senour vortex this month and have not noticed any real change in color matches. I agree that you have to pick the right chip color and trust it because the color changes once it is cleared. I still am not comfortable with the clear coats, the one we were using is not waterborne compatable.
Sorry not much help
Johnthanks guys. i agree it is hit or miss but it just seems like its been a miss more often. i do go with the color chips but a few of the cars ive had does not match to the available chips. the alternate color chips are not always available which sends me on a goose hunt doing spray outs. im doing a toyota 4Q2 right now which has 10 possibilies including the std. i just made a custom formula after doing 4 spray outs already. :pcorn:
May 22, 2010 at 12:41 am #21424Are you using the new prospector color reference system. I was told they are using this system and going away from the alternates. Not that it has anything to do with color match but what clearcoat and sealer are you using?
Have a good weekend
JohnAnonymousMay 22, 2010 at 3:54 am #21437I’ve found the Onyx HD line good for color matching, really haven’t noticed any difference compared to the solvent (Diamont) in that sense. All systems are hit and miss, I’ve been happy with BASF though. I think the other lines may have the edge in other area’s.

John[/quote]hey dog, ive been using prospector and when there is a chip ill trust it enough to skip the spray out. but ive been having problems where the prospector wont have the color chips for the alternates. they are always blendable but sometimes i dont want to blend like on a rear bumper. im new to the system and just trying to get a feel for it, but overall i like it. as for the sealer iam using an acme finish 1 sealer. my clears are crossfire 2110 and ipc21, i like them both alot.
