I just noticed basf changed their sites plastic methods here, https://www.basfrefinish.com/vta/R-M/plastics_methods.htm. I had always wondered why manufacturers applied soluble primer if it needed to be removed. Apparently soluble primers are acceptable when topcoating with waterborne paint. I’ve been wondering this for a while and could never get a straight answer, the last basf training instructors best answer was they applied soluble primer because their idiots, never mentioned you could topcoat with water, he said you had to strip em and thats what I’ve been doing…..is this new to anyone else???

well if they come with primer on em i just scuff em an shoot em an have never had a problem even have had good luck with the aftermrkt ones coarse i alway seal all of em regaurdless just seam to get better chip resistance with a sealer on em still prefer doing the raw ones though

i’ve had some primers on a/m bumpers wrinkle before when sealing them. they were usually the ones that have the paint instructions on them that say dont seal. just scuff and base.

I’ve never wrinkled primers with sealer, i have once with basecoat. It was the aftermarket stuff I’ve had problems with in the past just sanding and painting. I hear some people have problems with certain OEM stuff too. I had a run on a bunch of aftermaket bumpers come back chipping / peeling quite a while ago. Since then we’ve stripped any soluble primers as per the paint manufacturers recommendations & have been problem free since. Its just a pain in the a$$,,,,not so much for me, but for the clean up kid!
