I am more and more amazed with the good information (still have to weed through the bad) on the web. As an introduction, I’m not a professional car guy, in fact my day job has more to do with the net than a car. . . I prefer to do my own mechanical work on my cars, although I am not afraid to ask for help or hire out when needed (example my wife’s timing belt, wasn’t interested!)
Growing up I was taught how to work on the engine and those mechanical components, but body work and paint were something beyond my training scope! I’m interested in changing that. I had previously gotten some repair work done on my wife’s Sienna, did it through a guy, not a shop. He did a poor job on the paint part, not trying to be OCD/anal, rather after reading this site for a bit I now know what I didn’t before. He didn’t use a separate clear coat, he said he used one that included the clear. Looks ok, but there are micro scratches in the paint. They really show in the sun. Kids do just as much damage, it just shows I may be able to do a better job myself.
Add to that, my insurance company just gave me a few checks for hail damage. One is for a vehicle that I was planning on selling, so I thought I could try some paintless dent repair on it, and learn in the process. The kicker was for the Sienna they included replacing the hood and repainting it. That got me to searching and watching you tube stuff, stumbled across this site, and thought wow, I wonder if I can fix a couple of issues on the sienna before I try a big paint job. . .
So total newbie, will be researching garage painting, setup, equipment purchases, paint selection (should you order online or buy local), process and procedures. . .
There are two areas I’m going to start with, right after the last repair my wife’s bumper magically found a pole. I figured that would be a good start. The other area is the rear door got scratched by the garage door, that would be the second place. I figure if I screw the bumper up, its just a bumper. If I do a good job there I can look to go further.
So maybe I’m crazy, I’m still a guy who will fix a TV rather than replace it (assuming the cost benefit is there) I’m handy, but I know I don’t know a lot at this point! :silly:
