What’s on my mind right now is our waterborne conversion. We went to the vancouver training center for the course and when we came back did a huge cleanup of the mixing room and put in the new system.Last week was the first week of spraying and it went pretty good.We are using autowave,so far so good.
    I feel for ya Han,I hate re-doing stuff,at least it wasn’t a complete.

Looks good charlie, nice work,Ive always been a fan of novas.Have you ever tried any of the lesonal clears, glamour clear is a nice product and not much more money than 4.0 clear.Do you like the lph or have you tried the w-400 compliant gun?

What you are saying jimmo makes sense,it is interesting how paint companies have a different recomendation for blending.I used to use rm and thats how I did my blends until now.I found the autowave very user friendly and did not experience any negatives like I heard about the product.Coverage is better than autobase + even if you don’t use a tinted sealer. We sprayed the new caddy color white diamond 3 stage pearl over a dark blue. The white foundation coat covered the dark blue in 2 med coats. I’m not brand loyal by any means but I think the autowave will work great for us.

Yes I am going to start doing this too,I just got back from the Sikkens tarining center in Vancouver for the waterborne training. They recomend blending the same way, even over the wet bed orientation coat.We cleaned up and painted our mixing room today and made the switch. We will be using it on monday.

We have a couple of them at our shop and they seem to work well for the price. The other painter at work uses one for sealer, base and clear. They don’t have a very wide fan but other than that it seems ok.I use a sata rp,sata rp 3000 or a devilbiss plus.

Thanks for the kind words guys.I used lesonal SB base coat and HS+ clear. This car belongs to the father of a kid who used to prep for us.
They did a frame off restoration and all the body work at their garage at home. They asked me if I would go over it and paint it for them.
I never should have touched it,the old man is being a pain in the ass.

I am not brand loyal to anybody,I have sprayed just about everyones bc/cc in my 25 years in the industry. But where I am(western Canada) basf is way more money and so is dupont.I’m not a big fan of reps who bad mouth other companies just to make a sale.We spend about $30,000-$40,000 a month just on paint, and in my 8 years of working there we have had very few problems.
Ryan I have used lesonal glamour clear and I really like it,it has a nice gloss and easy to spray.I’m using it on a 70 chevelle next week and I will post pics when I’m done.I like all the lesonal clears, from what I have used they work really well and look great.
Our other painter who has been at the shop since 86 is a diehard sikkens man and will not change,so I think we are stuck with it.We will be going to the Vancouver training center in the next month or so,I’ll keep you guys posted. In my city and Calgary most of the shops have converted, shops are using dupont, ppg(nexa, old ICI Aqua base,I shot it in the 90’s) sherwin williams, basf. Will be interesting as time goes on.

Bondo you are feakin hiliarious,it would be fun to drink beer with you sometime.

You guys have me worried, might have to look at something else.I know the coverage is good if you use the right shade of colorbuild+ sealer. We are the last solvent shop that our supplier has,so he wants to get us changed over.Joe what training center did you go to??There are some shops in my area that are having problems with Sherwin williams awx,it will be interesting to see in the future who has the best product.

    March 7, 2009 at 11:37 pm #13189

That is a very good comparison Joe,I have no experience with the 90 line but have heard good things about it.I just thought I would add a few things about Sikkens. You don’t have to use the color build plus primer but it is a must for the sealer to be tinted(I’m not a big fan of color build primer so we use something else)The superior clear is very pricey about $500 retail per sprayable gallon, and it needs to be baked or it is real slow. You could also use HS+lv or lessonal pro air wich is a fast air dry clear. Our shop already has a new screw type compressor and our new booth is 4 years old,all we need is a few hand held blowers. It seems every rep is different as to what you need, but our reps have taken good care of us(our shop has been using sikkens since 87 maybe that’s why??)We have not made the switch yet and are still using solvent, but it will be a done deal in the next month or so.We have demoed it at our shop a few times and I have not been to the training center yet for autowave so I can’t really comment.

Nice painting dude, well done.I’m curious how do you compare the sata rp 3000 to the Iwata w-400??Which one do you like better?
