i don’t strain my water through any filter, just mix straight in the liner, assuming your useing the pps wb liners. the lids are the only liners i use. i have also notice with enviro, i will get small fish eyes to. i concluded that it’s also cleaner.
what kind of tack rags do yo use, and are you tacking in between coats?October 21, 2010 at 7:52 am #24439
Thanks for the test lild! I love hearing about quirky gun set ups;) At least we all know what happens now! I dont blame you for ging back to the “factory” set up. I woulnt want to try an explain to my boss why my paint job is all jacked up:rofl
no problem. it seems like since i had both guns, and instead of some wasteing moneys to find out. it would be easy for me just to go ahead and do it.
one thing i have notice i have a old 1.4 tip from my exstinck 2000, thought the tip would fit, but the hole on the 3000 is too small.
guess sata makes sure that they sell guns.October 21, 2010 at 7:49 am #24438
Spraying sealer isn’t going to show anything, clear is what you need to try it on.The “black thingy” is called an air distribution ring.I thought there was a brass restictor up inside the handle where the air inlet is.Very interesting try some clear next.
before i cleared the test car. i took a cleaning brush and poke it up into the air hose inlet, on both guns. went straight up to the t section of the body. as far as i can tell the only difference is the air distribution rings are slightly different. like i said both had the same amount of holes, same location of those holes, the rp’s were slightly bigger. but if i’m not mistaken you should be able to remove the air distribution ring. but then that would defet the purpose.
October 21, 2010 at 7:04 am #24434ok. clear coat test subject. 08′ eclipse. new hood, blending the color on the center of the front cover, blending the fenders.
clear—ppg dc3000 w/dch95 hardner.
so i decided to start with the front cover since it was off the car.
set fan control know with the little arrow pointing up to the cup. my usual setting.
set psi to max hvlp setting. 30 psi. start on one side. dry spray. yep like there wasn’t enough psi. up the psi to rp setting max 35. a little better, with orange peel. this is on one side. uped the psi. to 45. a little more better, so turned the fan knob to where the arrow was pointing to the air hose inlet. much better.after this setting, i notice that when i pulled the trigger, in the middle of the fan spray, i could see a stream of clear in the middle of it. no it wasn’t puttering, just a striaght stream.
so i decided to go and change out the guns back to there settings before finishing the job.
so it seemed to work fine with reduced sealer, but i was right as to putting to much out. the other cover i sealed was a rock chip infested, that i sanded out to make look pretty. i use the new envirobase sealer, and normally it won’t show cut through rings, but it did too night as if i soaked it on.
2k clear–nope.the test for was a FAIL.
October 21, 2010 at 5:51 am #24432i love to try some clear with this, but i don’t have a pos waiting to be painted. and besides i thought the sealer was a good ideal. it’s reduced, my clear is 2k. but i’m temped on this eclipse i got in there now.
October 21, 2010 at 5:09 am #24430
my jobbers price on vibrance pearls are 114.00ea for 6oz bottles.
theres a guy on ebay selling them for 25.00 + 4.95 shipping
got to wonder how legit he is.:stoned that seems way to good of a deal.:kofeeOctober 21, 2010 at 4:05 am #24429ok. here’s the verdict.
after takeing both guns apart, which the guns body’s are identicle, execpt the hvlp and rp markings. i looked at the little black plastic piece that is behind the tip. i will call this the air channel thingy.
well after lookin at both black thingy’s. they both have the same amount of air chanells, and they’re all in the same position, the only difference is the openings on the rp are slightly bigger than the hvlp. but these will stay in place for the sake of science.any ways, i put the rp, needle, tip, and air cap on the hvlp. went in to spray my sealer on bumper cover.
so what i did, i set the psi at 30 max for hvlp setting. i have the expsenvie sata gauge so i know i had the correct psi.pulled the trigger, psi sounded a little low. began to spray the cover, too much fluid, bumped up the psi, to 35 max for rp settings according to the gauge. much better but still put a lot of fluid. either way, very little orange peel. but then agian the sealer is reduced.
so i conclude 2 things. even though both of my guns are 1.3’s. it sprayed like a 1.4-1.5 tip. and the psi would need to be more like 40-45 depending on what you sprayed.
so it pretty muched sprayed like my old sata 90. a little playing around with the settings, and i’m sure it would spray nicely.
so yes you can switch the parts, and the gun will spray fine, the only parts you might not be able to chage is the black air channel thingy’s.
but it is workable. is it worth it? ???????? depends on how much coin you save.October 21, 2010 at 3:13 am #24428well i’m gettin ready to let you know what happens, and besides both guns have a max 29 psi.. so i’m gona test it some sealer.
October 20, 2010 at 6:34 am #24394

here I was thinking high solids would be thicker and low voc the opposite….
Solid content has nothing to do with viscosity. Low voc doesn’t mean high solids either.
ok, now i’m confused. :lol1
October 20, 2010 at 5:37 am #24384not trying to be a smart tail. but next time let pdr fix the hail damage. hell these guys are here every mon. takeing care of the small stuff. plus it saves all kinds of headaches with hail damage.
as for your problme. we had this happen once with a door skin. all we did was cut the adhessive. and then applied more adhessive. the only thing we can think of was, that as the adhesive dryied, it shrank, pulling the sheet metal.October 20, 2010 at 5:27 am #24382i know enviro is a little different. but i had the same problem at first. ton of thrash in the paint.
what i found out was, a few things. one i was useing gersons version of wb linners. bad ideal. when i orederd some 3m’s wb pps. i saw the difference was in the strainers on the lids. gerson’s was still cotton, 3m’s was silk. plus ppg found out a long time ago that the cotton strainers use a water soliable glue, the strainers would come apart. this is what happen with the gersons.the other thing was, that if i didn’t let the base dry well enough. that the base even though i used ppg’s recomended blue base tack rags. it would pull fibers out of the tack rag.
also i have the blowers too. sometimes i use thema sometimes i use my blower. and your really have to forget about how you spray solvent. i had to find out the hard way spray it the way they tell you, or have all the problem you have.
October 20, 2010 at 5:17 am #24381that’s a smart ideal. but i got you beat on the vibrance price. maybe the bottles i have may be bigger or maybe the price has droped, i will have to look into that. i know when they first released them, and are used more in the newer oem colors, i was paying 115 a bottle.
one time we did a caddy, body cut in the parts needed. useid a harliqence bottle 350 a peice. yeah i didn’t know about the cost untill after i oreder the 2nd bottle and painted the car. i threw a fit. and you know what the damn insurance comp. didn’t want to pay for it.
by the way i still have some.October 20, 2010 at 5:11 am #24379since i’ve go the hang of useing water, it’s actually made me a better painter with solvent. yes we have both, i have the water. the bodyshop has the solvent.
as for dupont i heard the same thing. way too many problems, and they plan on releaseing a low voc base.
i also agree, it’s not cheap to switch over. i know with ppg, you have to do a 3 part induction program, and this is only after they check over your both, and air supply.
the base alone is 10% more than the solvent. but it only cost me like 50 cents at most to reduce 18 0z. of base.
so yeah i can see how a low voc could counter the price of water. but i don’t know for sure. but it’s my understanding that low voc clear is pretty thick to spray, i wonder if this will be true with the base.
