This morning I started off around 11am and worked the better half of the day.
Here is what happened today. I put the bumper back on the car just because sanding is much easier on the wide open areas while the bumper is secured. I blocked as much as I could with 320, then took it off the car and blocked the rest. That took a long time. From there I put down my guide coat (guide coat helps to sand out rough areas in primer) and wetsanded with 400, that almost took just as long. I followed that up with 600 grit wet.
Once I was done sanding, I cleaned out the inside of the bumper where dirt can be a problem when painting. Once that was all cleaned I came up with a bumper stand to get the bumper as horizontal as possible without missing the bottom portion of the bumper when spraying.
At this point I set up the booth and brought the bumper in. I cleaned it up with water based W&G only. I first put down Omni b92p base to cover the bumper, then I followed it up with 2 more coats DBC b92p. then DC 3000 & and some fisheye eliminator and the rest is history. I have a few small hangers to buff out and about ten specs of dirt. Other then that I am happy. I will let it dry overnight and buff tomorrow.
Enjoy the pics!
looks pretty sweet. How did you manage hangers with that dc3000  Sure I didnt paint it
I can attribute two factors.
1) Fisheye Elminator, I have to use it, tried many times not to use
2) Half way through clearing the bumper, I was painting in a CLOUD, the booth is great and all, keeps out dust, but it is way to small for a bumper. I could barely see what I was doing, I am glad I managed to only get a few hangers.Ben wrote:
Looks Good Nex! What do the neighbors think of all that back yard body work going down! :lol1
Thanks! It is only once and a while that I am priming something in the backyard. The hedges help to hide what I am doing, but I have been doing it for four years now with fiberglass as well and my neighbors don’t care. They usually ask me what I am working on next =)Ben wrote:
Looks like you are making good progress. Even your first paint job wasn’t bad at all for someone with little experience. As far as the sanding goes, I like the hook-it II paper, but for doing something at home I would stick with the wet sanding since it is much cheaper and lasts a lot longer (not to mention the lack of dust).
What grit do you intend on sanding the primer with?
Thanks Ben, I am very particular which is why i couldn’t live with the paint flaws. This time around should be much better! The hookit pads make quick work, but your right, they are expensive!!
I am going to knock the top coat of the primer with 320 to smooth things out, then guide coat, then 400 and 600 wet.
This is actually the color of my Honda accord and for that reason this is the color that I have shot the most. I have had fantastic results with DBC as a butt match for my car. I had gotten both bumpers painted before without blending and it is dead on. Only in the sun and when the car is buffed can you really see the blue pearl.
