Thanks for your help guys! I will cross reference the BASF number through my computer on Monday. If that doesn’t work I will call the BASF store in town. I would rather buy local. I swear nothing I do for family is ever easy. Why couldn’t it be a solid color!

No I use Dupont. It’s the clearcoated color. It appears to be a 3-stage. On color-rite there is a base color and a top color.

This is starting to become a real PITA!

The prices from color-rite are outrageous! I wonder if our computer can cross reference color-rite paint codes?

I only use it to cover up my Superduty swirls and trap solvents!:P One day you guys will have a clue!

But really I don’t think we have any wax in our shop. We used to use Bufords Pro Gold on dark colors. It’s a straight carnuba wax so it shouldn’t trap anything. Ultrafina has been a lifesaver!

It’s a good idea. Two full coats of clear can make the panel you painted darker. Here’s the best analogy for this situation. If you have ever flown in a plane and looked out the window while flying over land and looked at a swimming pool. The deep end is darker than the shallow. The pool isn’t painted darker on one end nor is the water a different color in parts of a pool. What your seeing is how long it takes the sunlight to reflect the color on the bottom of the pool back at you. With more clear it takes longer for the light to reflect therefore giving a darkening effect.

Something to think about, try and find a kid or someone to give you a hand with it. If you could get $5000-6000 for the job, pay some kid $150 to scuff all the jambs, clean it up and mask it wouldn’t be to bad. He would have a little cash in his pocket and the real crappy part of the job would be over.

There are probably a few ways that you could work this deal and not come out to bad. I have a helper at work that would probably be up for something like that. Hell he could even help prep a lot of it. Think smarter don’t work harder.

I think you will like this place!

What kind of paint you spray?

How many weeks would it take you to get it done? How much money do you want to make a week? If you want to bring home $800 a week while on this job figure out how long it will take you, add a week or two, add your materials and you have a price. I know its not real scientific but it seems to work out pretty good most of the time.

If you don’t care if you get the job I would say $6000-7000. Also don’t start pricing low it will hurt you in the end. If you told the guy around $9000 then came back with $6500 he would think he was getting a deal!

At work I write estimates sometimes. When a job rolls in that I want I try to sell. When a job comes in that I don’t want I will still sell a little, but I will load the estimate. You would be surprised how many of those we will actually get.

BTW, that would be a pain in the ass to do all over!

The liquor store by my work knows me well!:cheer:

The people in the area of town we are in tend to spend their money with other neighborhood businesses. So in a way yes.

I don’t think that price is bad although I have never used that product before. I have heard its PPG also. I would imagine that a gallon of Dupont would be more than $260 though. I will check my computer on monday at work and see.

Is Metalux paint any good, I have never used it either?

Sorry to hear of the death in your family!

What brand of basecoat do you use BK?

I get a healthy discount on Dupont products, if you need anything let me know.

By the way, how about those Cards!

Looks good! I like painting cars in pieces like that. No lines in the jambs anywhere. Nice work!

    March 28, 2009 at 5:09 am #13630

Man Ding, that car looks good!

    March 25, 2009 at 6:41 pm #13566

You could use epoxy as a sealer with no etch or etch and urethane seal. Just make sure its white!I wouldn’t just etch and base over top make sure you seal over etch. I’m not sure I wouldn’t paint the car apart. If you have someone to help you hang the doors I would probably paint and jamb the car at once then paint fenders, doors, bumpers, hood , and decklid in another session.
