    Hello everyone.
Im looking to paint over my origianl paint. and ive done a little research but looking to see what you would suggest. About.com or ehow.com say to scuff it up and paint over then a friend tells me to prime it after scratching down with 80 grit.. the paint is not bad at all but want to prep it for the shop to get a real paint job, since i am nervous about painting it myself.. same color of course but just nervous. any info is great thanks!

If the paint is truly in good condition you could simply sand it with 600 grit, but the odds are some area’s will need a bit more then that. Sanding it down with 80 and priming it sounds like an awful idea.

i figured 80 grit was to much but you think sanding it with 600 then wax/degreaser and straight paint is best..and no primer?

Ya man, if the paints in good condition then 600 is all thats necessary for paint. Throwing unneeded primer on will build the paint film and make it less durable imho.

of course if the paint is in good condition, then why the need to repaint it

because it has the small surface scratches. and just needs to be cleaned up a new coat would def. help.

Why not just spend a couple hundred and have a professional detailer give the outside a good going over. Bet you’ll be surprised 😉

So whats the plan then? painting the whole truck or just the repaired panels?

I need to fix the bubble rust on the bed fender wells and front passenger fender. Then paint. Has any one used patch panels ? I plan on welding them in with butt welds and the Eastwood clamps.

Well plan on lots of hours…..a lot. Also plan on spending thousands of dollars. It would be your best bet to follow “ding’s” advice.

Have the truck detailed? It needs Rear fender wells. Not going to have them buff rust bubbles..

maybe you could post some pictures of the damage, for a first timer its gonna be a challenge to jump into no question. Best advice I can think of is make sure everything lines up perfectly before pulling that mig trigger, been there…sucks..lol. To turn out a good job you’ll have to invest a bit more time with the basics brother, principles of using filler, primers, base, blending & clear.
