I am going over today to pick up a few old fenders and Tanks to work on for time being to hang on his walls of the store.
What started all this was an old BMW sitting in the shop I told him sell him a new paint job he said he does want it painted and asked me how much I would charge to do it. Thats when I asked you guys. He had the neibor auto paint guy quote 2500 I said heck we can make some money at that! he also said he had another quote of 4300 thats when I started wondering what am I not seeing?
This one bike in particular has a bit of damage crack her or two and has been repainted before I can tell by a spot were its scratched.
Any way its a full dressed deal wind screen fairing side covers saddle bags trunk and a little trailor I figured about 1200-1500 for all of it to him he pulls it all apart and pays for color.I agree with you guys on multiple color stuff and some graffics stuff BUT I am still new at this stuff I only have a few compleets under my belt and have never tride any fancy stuff YET I am not saying I cant do it its just intimidating right now.
I have contacted a Local sighn company who also does graffic stuff and is willing to make up graffic stencels and stuff for me wich is a plus but I have to draw the stuff out or get photos of stuff for him to make up.
I am a restoration shop a Lil diffrent from these guys.
At least I am trying too be, I am just starting up.
I would like to say I do it for my love of the cars :wak but nope! its for the Money! :exciBig time problem for me is the cost of Basic supplies!
Consumables like 2″ Sanding/Grinding disks $.50-$1.00 each 3″ cutting wheels $1.00-$1.50
Sandpaper and Tape two more that cost too much.
Acetone up to $20 a gal. locallyThese are Basic supplies were the costs are hard to pass on too the customer and cut into the bottom line and take away from the profits.
The Big corporations that make these supplies such as 3M dont care much about small shops, Because we cant buy these consumables in huge quantities like other major corporations do like an airline or a Major MFG.
The small shop owner operator has the middle man that we have to contend with.
It would be more cost effective to buy direct from the Mfg without the middle man mark up, even when buying larger quantities is required to get the discounts.
*********************************
Other Major problems would be the costs of insurance, workers comp, and other state required fee’s and Taxes Permits etc..
I dont think they want anyone starting a body shop let alone a restoration shop.  :S Talk about cost prohibitive. :blink:I really like the SPI stuff!!! I’m new at this stuff myself though
I can lay out SPI’s MS clear with no need to Buff most projects!
I also like Transtar Euro clear That’s a good one but spendy.
Buffing was required on that one after a few coats and Beers I think the Beer had something to do with it though as the first two coats were killer  I dunno the jury’s still out on that job. :blush:Hey Bondo?
Was that supposed to be one or two beer between coats? I forgot to ask you…
Oh well…I think after the second coat I went too three any way  .
(threw the instructions out after the second coat  )
(dont do that! ) read your tech sheets! :S  :silly:  :huh:All too often any more when I have the opportunity to check out other shops whether it be an auto body shop or mechanical shop even dealer ships I find Butchers that dont know there front from there rear! and there charging Big bucks for service of any kind and yet the shop around the corner who doesn’t get the heavy traffic charges less does better work and has a better knowledge about things yet he’s starving for business.
Honestly most individuals wouldn’t know good work from bad work even when its was pointed out too them! even the guy doing the work these days more often than not!! :
A NATION WIDE Warranty repair centers for all of the MFG is coming!
The days coming when it wont matter what the car make is you take it too one of two or three diffrent name brand repair centers and they will bill the mfg for the warranty repair work. especially Now that all the dealerships are going away its inevitable.Stone wrote:
Yep. once you got this one fixed. You could throw some of that Mold Release agent on it. throw it in that Molding foam and have a mold in 10 minutes. Then charge him out the *** to sell them a Super Light weight, Amazingly strong Carbon fiber Front end.
yup :pcorn:

look how quick and easy it is :lol1
If you can get your hands on the materials cheap enough! That’s exactly what I would do too.
A lot of times race car parts like that are already being sold new for what you can make them for especially if a lot of guys are running the same type of car.
When I lived in Tulsa I used to repair a few diffrent guys Sprint car wings so often I wanted to just start making them from scratch and selling them but when I got done looking into all the materials and stuff to make them I found I couldn’t compete with the other guy’s who made them new.
So I just left it alone and just repaired. So no one has tried this gizmo or knows of some one who has

Hi Brad
When ever I pull a car into the booth ready for paint the thing has a static charge so heavy it pulls dust and anything out of the air onto the body like a Magnet After you tack it off and look at it you say to yourself I just wiped that! my booth is clean too its weird. doesn’t matter how well I pre wipe the car or Mop the floor of the booth   :huh:The Static is so bad in this area any time you touch something you get Zapped not little Zaps either BIG ones :cens winter is worse than summers but still its bad here year round. :S I have never lived in an area were the static is so bad.
Might be all the Bombs they tested here years ago who knows :lol1I’m not trying to eliminate getting Zapped all the time although that would be nice but I would like to eliminate the static cling off the cars before painting.
