Thats alot of money in paint! I think they all work, you just have to adapt to the one you are using. Seems like with that kind of money a month they should all be kissing your butt trying to get in the door. Since Sikkens and Dupont are the only 2 I have sprayed my comparison would be that I would go with Sikkens for looks and Dupont for production.
March 8, 2009 at 10:11 pm #13216PPG has been all over us wanted to take me to Columbus for a waterborne demo. They continually slam everybody else and say they are #1. That stuff turns me away from them. I hate when people slam somebody else it makes me think they are trying to cover up their own faults. I will agree with you about Sikkens not being all that. Have you ever used the Lesonal glamor clear. Man that is nice looking, it sucks to buff though.
March 8, 2009 at 9:14 pm #13212I have signed quite a few myself. How do you like spraying with those GTI’s compared to a W400? Some people love Devilbiss guns, I have never really liked any of them until I tried a CVI.
Do you ever use the 450 clear? I sprayed a car for a guy a few years ago and thats what I put on it and I remember it being a really nice clear. How does it compare to the other Glasurit clears? When we demoed it I used 255 and 550. I didn’t like the 255. The 550 layed down really good but did die back some. It was nice for a faster clear. I hated the sealer!
March 8, 2009 at 9:08 pm #13211I am the only shop in my city currently on waterborne so I really have nothing to compare. I think you will be fine with Sikkens. The only drawback I saw was the price. It was higher than there solvent and that was high. I personally think Sikkens is overpriced for what you get. It is a nice product but not the best. I have noticed that every jobber in my area is knocking everybody elses product except for Dupont. Its like a giant cat-fight. Kinda pitiful!
I think it will be interesting once a few more people on here make the switch to here some different opinions. I think it will end up being valuable as I trust other painters a hell of alot more than any rep.
March 8, 2009 at 5:47 pm #13206I thought you were an Iwata guy? Are you spraying with a GTI or a Plus in your last 2 vids? Looks really good! I hate painting spoilers!
March 8, 2009 at 5:33 pm #13205Zarbat, I always solvent wipe last so you will be fine. One good thing with water is that if you put your first coat on and something happens(fisheyes or streaking) you can wipe it off with a wet rag.
I saw the same thing as you Joe when we demoed Autowave. Their new clear is nice but REALLY expensive. You can use regular HS+ clear over Autowave. I would like to try 90-line, it sounds nice from what your saying. Autowaves coverage wasn’t very good when I sprayed it, I didn’t think it was much different than Autobase Plus.
March 7, 2009 at 8:53 am #13183The sata is faster but a little heavier looking finish. The iwata puts out a little bit better finish for me and I feel more in control of it. If I painted the same car twice and told you to pick out which car was sprayed with which gun I don’t think you could.
The iwata is a little finicky. I have found that it sprays nicer with the fan adjusted in quite a bit. The actual fan size doesn’t seem to change but it wets up the car nicer. Also I don’t think Iwata’s recommended pressure is all that hot. It needs to be bumped up a few psi. I spray the W400 at 27-30psi. Also a 1.4 Iwata sprays like a 1.3 SataI should also point out that I have been a pretty die-hard Iwata guy for about 4 years now. If I had spent that time working with an RP I might have a different opinion. I do love my RP3000 though. Both very nice guns its just a matter of what you are more comfortable with. If you haven’t used one you should give one a try.
March 7, 2009 at 8:34 am #13181your aluminum cup will be fine. Any glass cleaner works good. I have used Windex, Sprayway, and 3M. They all work good.
The sikkens water is a little more tempermental than Dupont.
Joe, I don’t think the Cromax is to much of a pain in the rear, but I have never used 90 line. You can shake the solid tints just not the metallics and pearls. It mixes really easy so not shaking isn’t a big deal at all. The one good thing about Cromax is every color is 1.5 coat coverage wet on wet. If you get back on it it wants to die back a little.
How do you like the 90 line? I have only heard good things about Glasurit. I have only sprayed a little bit so I don’t know much about it. How do you compare the Autowave to 90 line?March 7, 2009 at 5:25 am #13172Also no metal cups or wooden sticks. And make sure your strainers are at least 175 micron and are made for waterborne. If not the glue that holds the strainer to the paper will break down in a matter of seconds.
March 7, 2009 at 5:15 am #13171The alcohol and water should work fine. I would use glass cleaner afterwards and follow that up with a solvent cleaner. You can’t have one too clean when using waterborne.the glass cleaner is mostly for getting rid of streaks. Make sure to use solvent cleaner to as waterborne has a tendency to fisheye somewhat easily compared to solvent base.oh ya DO NOT shake your base only stir.
March 6, 2009 at 11:36 pm #13166Also when you are cleaning your panels make sure you use a waterborne cleaner and a solvent cleaner. Make sure you wipe it on and off I one direction only. By doing this you will drag tha contamination off and not smear it around. If you don’t when you apply your basecoat you will see streaks in it that won’t go away. Glass cleaner works very well for getting rid of the streaks before you paint
March 6, 2009 at 11:26 pm #13165Clean your gun with warm water in a squirt bottle. Then pull the needle out and flush again. Once done rinse with acetone. The warm water will clean it nicely. Make sure you spray your costs wet. Once covered apply an orientation coat and you should be good to go. A hair drier with some heat should work fine. If your area is clean you could use a box fan on low speed would also work. If the humidity is low it will dry on its own fairly quick. If you have to blend try not to flick your wrist to much as it isn’t needed, you don’t want a lot of dry overspray.
March 5, 2009 at 10:23 pm #13146I use spies clears and sealers mostly along with some of the DuPont clears. Spies waterborn doesn’t have very good colormatch on domestic cars. They are really pushing the DuPont base. Our jobber carries both lines so I kinda pick the best of both. My heart belongs to spies though! Touching isn’t it!
March 5, 2009 at 8:54 pm #13144Oh ya I have always used an overlap like that. Don’t know if its the right way or not its how I’ve always painted.
