Nice booth Jimmo, when I grow up I may get one and get out of the garage.

That’s funny Bob…Smooth, I only think there has ever been one other forum as good as this one…we will let it remain nameless, but I will say it’s not paint and body related. Enjoy!!!

Enthusiasts like me welcome you fully!!! I’m sure you have seen the wealth of knowledge and humility displayed on this site (that’s what got me interested, people helping people and not asking for one thing in return). Every now and again, I even get to help someone, so that works out. :welc

Absolutely you can do it without warping the metal. I would be forewarned as the two gentlemen have advised, be concerned about the pits in the metal / corrosion and I would definitely use a “heat sink” if you can get it behind the steel. A piece copper or aluminum should bode well and since they are dissimilar metals, the will not be welded together with the steel but merely absorb heat from the weld.

Outside of that enjoy, move the welds around as far apart as possible, take your time and have fun.

While this doesn’t do a lot to address your exact situation without a photo, there is a video right here on this sight about blending bumper paint. Hope it helps when you get to that stage?

I can only find one thing to complain about concerning the VW paint job….it lacks the character my paint jobs have from all the orange peel in my clear, lol. Great job!!!

Thanks guys, I will probably just take the headliner out. This will also give me an opportunity to practice some metal working since this job is not time dependent (meaning hammer, dolly, slapping spoon and shrinking disc work). I will try and post some pics whenever this work starts as they may help another enthusiast.

Bondo, that looks like a professional shop, are you trying to say that’s actually you in the videos and not a stand-in?

That looks like a good “butcher” job with a sharp knife. I am probably on of the few people who enjoy rust work (actually I just like to weld). That’s going to come out sweet, I feel for you discomfort about the rust as I am the same way about taking out lights, just don’t like it, haha. Would love to see the epoxy (if you use epoxy on bare metal), filler, prime, paint and clear picks as well. Thanks for sharing, you pros make my day.
