BondoKing, many who have both the purple and orange cap seem to agree that orange cap sprays faster and its wayyy better for most basecoats than purple cap.

The purple cap just spray at low pressure and dusts in the basecoat, very slow and its only recommended to be used tor pearls and tough mettlaics. Hub @asetusa recommend this cap over purple and after doing some search around, people seem to be satisfied with the performance of the orange cap.

I’ll find out when I spray with it.

3M wetsanding discs seem to be great stuff with lots of good reviews, but their compounds/pads/polishes are kinda pricey.

There are other buffing systems that work great with half of the price.

I’ll report back. 🙂

I also got a few high flow stuff and I’ll be shooting clear with sata rp 3000 to see how it sprays.

Woot that’d be great! :cheer:

Jimmo, do you use the Glasurit 90 line? Whats the price difference to R-M Onyx? Obviously its more pricey but how much is the price difference?

I’m gonna use R-M/Glaso basecoats from now on. Got a gallon og UR50 and a part of R-M Diamont the other day, gonna try it as soon as I get that orange cap.

Nice video! I like watching spraying vids.

Do I see an orange cap? What guns are you using for base and clear?
Im sticking with my solvent base until I cant get it anymore :P
You are lucky!

Canada goes waterborne by January 2010, so I might as well get used to it. 🙁

ryanbrown999,
Just making sure, is it ok to wipe the panel with solvent cleanr (lets say Sikkens m600) before spraying waterborne?

Or I should use the solvent cleaner first and follow up with water/alcohol?

March 7, 2009 at 6:11 am #13176

ryanbrown999, thanks again! I have some sikkens M600 surface cleaner that I’ll use before spraying the basecoat.

At first I thought you meant to say do NOT use solvent based cleaner :silly:
Any particular glass cleaner that you like?

I’m just a hobbyist, is it ok if I use the aluminum cup that came with my iwata? If not I’ll probably go the PPS route later.

Joe@FCAB
The jobber also told me they do not use the shaking machine for waterborne. Something about bubbles… (??)
He told me just to stir it.

ryanbrown999 , thanks for reply.

So I should use only waterborne cleaner before spraying basecoat? Can I use distilled water mixed with isopropyl alcohol 1:1 instead?

I paint in a auto repair garage on weekends, so its definitely not a clean area.

Great job!

I used U-TECH SS the first time I used a paint gun. Great paint for its price.

The only 3M stuff I have is the Ultrafina which is GREAT for dark colors (IIRC I paind close to $50 for it! Its worth it though), and 3M swirl remover which I don’t use at all since it hides the swirls.

March 2, 2009 at 11:11 pm #13073

Got the kit Saturday and tried it on a dark metallic green yesterday. (Kia H5 IIRC).

It works great, and I didn’t see any haze or swirls under sun.
$150 is a GREAT deal!

I didn’t use the wax though.

I use Meguairs #105 compound and the Solo kit pads.

Anyone who has used both the 105 and cutting creme, can you comment which one is better?

I might get the kit just for the pads. $150 for the whole kit seems like a good deal since 3M stuff would cost way more.

I also have the 3M ultrafina, about $45 each but its worth it!
