Joe I started off at $2800 and came down to $2500.. The car itself is not worth the 6-7 grand, so i would not get the work

Ryan, I used to use nothing but PPG, then I went to another jobber in town called stories off of Ulrich road right off of Fern valley road beside the Mcdonalds there…

They used to carry Pro spray which I loved, however they said it was too expensive for some of their shops so they dropped it and went with Metalux which is a African owned company,.
they were supposed to have the extra tint in for this job but then they were still short,so they mixed it in GenStar which is owned by Northstar which is owned by someone else etc etc etc

I have used the Genstar when the dropped the Prospray and it sprays and smells like PPG.. So I have a gallon of it setting on the bench right now.. I got it for $260 with my discount.. Not bad I dont think or is it too expensive in your opinion??

Today is the first day I get to work on the car.. My grandma died and I spent everyday since then at the funeral home doing that gig.. Now at least I can focus on something positive 😉
BK, What are you charging for this job?
It probably will make you sick Han.. I am only charging the guy $2500.. Let me explain :pcorn:

I already have the white epoxy I will use as my sealer cause that is just what I use and its one less product for me to have to keep around and I have a barely used Universal Gallon kit of clear so there will be more than enough clear and some left over.. I have to buy a light colored 2k as I only have black 2k so that is one cost along with the base.. Figure I will make about $1800 or so once its all said and done with.. I buy products as I need them and of course I buy in gallon form so they last for more than one job.. Later on this summer I will have to buy clear and primer again, but it will just make a small collision job a re stocking job without a cash in hand profit.. Right now, i will be taking all this job as profit minus the things I have to buy..

The car is in good shape all things considered.. I did not take in consideration the extra time for some of the burn areas but that is what happens when you strike a deal without seeing the car as I know better than to do..

I try to look at it like this.. If I can get it out by this next weekend, that will be $1800 cash in hand.. I dont make that in 2 weeks at Ford, so i will gladly do the work for that amount.. Dont be greedy is my motto.. The owner has already hinted that he will probably have another one later this summer that will need a fresh squirt.. To me its money in the bank..
Same with that Zephyr I am doing for the little old lady.. While I am not charging her enough especially for all the extra things I have done at no charge, she has 2 other vehicles now that she wants me to repair ( daily drivers for her and her husband ).. Money in the bank and life customers

I am fortunate not to have the overhead that most of you guys have.. One day I may have to have the overhead as it may be the only way I will be able to continue to paint or if Ford and the economy keeps failing I may be out of a job and then it will be the only option I have to take care of my family.. Its the only trade I have and I could not make enough probably working for someone else..

So there is my long winded version of what i charged for this job

Sweet.. I like your ideas already.. saving me time and money.. So you guys think etch would be better here , than just sanding down the burnt engine bay area and spraying epoxy eh??

I have never used etch.. NEVER.. since its flippin lacquer, I will opt to buy a rattle can of it.. Sound ok?? I assume i will just paint right over the etch??

keep the idea’s coming guys.. I appreciate them!!!

When taping the interior door jamb area, I will pull the door rubber, mask on the backside of the door opening with 2″ so the sticky side is facing out, then I will pull a piece of paper that is larger than the opening and lay it on there, pushing it all around the edges..

I will also take 3/4″ masking tape and run it up and down and side to side for reinforcement in between the 2″ tape.. once you lay the paper on there its a done deal and it does a nice job in my opinion..

No tape lines at all on the body jamb, it looks just like the factory job, except its nicer 😉
Thanks for the kind words guys.I used lesonal SB base coat and HS+ clear. This car belongs to the father of a kid who used to prep for us.
They did a frame off restoration and all the body work at their garage at home. They asked me if I would go over it and paint it for them.
I never should have touched it,the old man is being a pain in the ass.
Thats when i tell them I will gladly remove the paint from the car and give it back to them the way it was before they gave it to you
I hear what you are saying fellas.. No big deal either way.. Im glad the caps work for you, and/or different guns.. Years ago I used to have separate guns for everything, now I just use the same gun for base and clear.. Primer is still separate..

    March 15, 2009 at 9:24 pm #13368

I would spray a candy thru the silver cap for sure.. I would leave the specialty caps for bases alone and not a candy.. In my personal opinion, all these caps are just money makers boys.. There is no reason to use another cap other than the silver one that comes with the gun..

Look at it like this.. If you drop $400 on a gun and it wont spray metallics etc well, you just wasted your money.. Its just a money thing in my opinion..

    Just my 2 quarts worth

Dinger, those jambs looked sooooo bad, I only shot one coat of G2 in them, but they needed a little filler brotha 😉 .. The body got 2 coats.. I will sand the jambs with some 400 and shoot a coat of sealer over them before spraying the paint in there B)
